GOOD-BYE KAYLA
SCENE 1: IT’S A DATE
SETTING:
SAM sits outside of a stall in a dressing room holding multiple dresses. KAYLA stands inside the stall changing into
dresses.
LIGHTS UP
SAM: I want to see it.
KAYLA: Only
if I like it.
SAM: That dress is gorgeous. You’ll look
amazing in it.
KAYLA:
Yeah, except I’ll look like a planet.
SAM: You will not, Kayla. Just put it on. (pause) So, what’s the
dress code for prom anyway?
KAYLA: For
you? A birthday suit.
SAM: You’re lucky that there’s a wall between
us, otherwise I’d
smack you.
KAYLA: I’d
like it too much, Sam. You know me.
SAM: Seriously, do you think I could get in
wearing jeans?
KAYLA: No
way. It’s completely formal. You could get away with a tux
instead of a dress.
SAM: But the tie is your thing. You’d wear it
with a dress and
leather gloves.
KAYLA:
That’s too Avril Lavigne. Make the gloves cotton and throw in
some Chuck Taylors and there you have
Kayla Tingle.
SAM: I tried getting you those rainbow gloves
at Hot Topic.
KAYLA: I
know. I’m just not ready for that yet.
SAM: Don’t tell me that you’re still worried
about Jake.
KAYLA:
Well, that would be a huge blow.
SAM: So was the way he dumped you. You don’t owe
him any courtesy.
KAYLA:
Please tell me you don’t think I still love him. I never really
did.
SAM: I know that. Calm down, Kayla. Okay,
next question: does a
home-made meal in the backyard count as going
out for dinner?
KAYLA: Will
your mom be joining us?
SAM: God, I hope not. She’ll make me wear a
dress.
KAYLA: We
can always take my car to Wendy’s.
SAM: Then how will you have my choco-dot
peanut butter cookies for
dessert?
KAYLA:
We’ll eat them in the parking lot. The Burger Commies can’t get
us there. I don’t like this one. Hand me
the black dress.
SAM: Wait, can I see that one on you?
KAYLA: I
don’t like it, Sam.
SAM: Fine. Remember, you only have to see it
before and after.
KAYLA: And
in pictures. And are you still insisting on drawing me?
SAM: It’s a big night. Cameras can’t capture
that. Besides, I can do
you in five minutes and you know it.
KAYLA: Will
you give me a rose to hold?
SAM: A whole bouquet.
KAYLA: Then
I’ll pose for you. Then I’ll steal the picture and lock it
away forever.
SAM: Where? It’s my house.
KAYLA: You
still haven’t found your graduation present.
SAM: That’s because my mom has a safe. Yours
is in there too.
KAYLA: Touché.
Now I have a question.
SAM: Fire away, mi amor.
KAYLA: Can
we take one picture for my parents?
SAM: Kayla, I think it’s still too soon.
KAYLA: I
know that. But maybe if they see it, they’ll understand us
better.
SAM: I don’t want to think of your dad’s eyes
looking at it.
KAYLA: They
used to like you. They never cared that you were. (pause)
They still think you turned me. They
think you changed their
little girl.
SAM: They love you. Your mom will come
around.
KAYLA: She
wouldn’t even look at me. Tanner says she can’t talk about
me anymore.
SAM: Your brother has never been your biggest
fan. He’s probably
making it up.
KAYLA: He’s
the only one in that house who still talks to me. He knew
long before they did.
SAM: Kayla, I promise you it won’t last. A
parent can’t stop loving
their child and anyone would have to be
pure evil not to love
you. Your mom and dad still love you.
KAYLA: You
know I’m glad that I’m living with you, right?
SAM: I do.
KAYLA: But
I still wish they would ask me to come back.
SAM: Just keep hoping, baby. You okay in
there?
KAYLA: Yeah.
This one’s a little tight. Can I see the blue one?
SAM: Do you want me to try to loosen
that one?
KAYLA: If
you want to. Let me get the straps back on. (steps out of
stall.
KAYLA is eight months pregnant and now in a black
dress)
Well?
SAM: (touching
KAYLA’s stomach) Where did that
baby go?
KAYLA:
Still here. Still obvious.
SAM: All I see is a ravishing young lady
pretending that she’s going
to be a mommy.
KAYLA:
Co-mommy. You promised to help.
SAM: I don’t think I can do much if he doesn’t
like cookies.
KAYLA: Are
you going to fix the back or what?
SAM: (loosening
straps) There. Any better?
KAYLA: Yes.
And it’s dark enough to hide any premature lactation.
SAM: Do you want it, then?
KAYLA: I think it will do.
SAM: Then get it off so I can pay for it.
KAYLA: I
don’t know. I think I want to wear it out. If I move quickly
I can get you a one-hundred percent
discount.
SAM: Good luck, Mommy.
KAYLA:
Fine. (enters stall) This will go
with my rainbow earrings,
won’t it?
SAM: Only if I can find rainbow suspenders
for my tux.
KAYLA: (peeks head out and kisses SAM) It’s a
date.
BLACKOUT
